About Steve ‘Chippy’ Paine
From copper to Chrome. I started working on internet projects in the late 80s as an apprentice at the BT research laboratories in Suffolk, UK and have never really done anything else proffesionally since then.
Network design, network management, network security design, websites, servers, linux kernels, LaTex, C-programming, USENET, lawful email interception systems, traffic bouncing, deep packet inspection systems and more. The list is long and includes installing garlic in server rooms to keep the bugs away.
I installed the router and completed the 2Mbps link install at the Cyberia internet cafe in London – the first in the UK. If I remember rightly, Keith Teare, one of the founders, personally paid for the parking ticket that I got that day. Even back then in 1996, I had little idea what was going around in the commercial world. My head was into configuration and programming and that was all that mattered to me.
My first professional blog, Carrypad, was started in 2006 and is still running today, although I have other proffesional activities now.
I work in the SEO industry now, marketing the data and tools from SISTRIX.
Hobbies: Mobile computing, motorbiking and camping, which occasioanally allign. I write about that at meetmobility.com. Hiblue, this site, was the name of a Live Streaming event service and studio I ran in Bonn. Germany between 2015 and 2018. One of the highlights was to support companies at COP23 in Bonn in 2017.
In 2014 I visited Ukraine with Deutsche Welle to train journalists on privacy and security. It was an incredibly eye-opening two-weeks of my life. Between 2015-2017 I was the Video Manager for the German / English computing website Notebookcheck.
In 2016 I opened a digital media studio in Bonn, Germany focusing on internet video.
I have a number of YouTube channels and continue to be involved in the evolving online media scene.
I speak German and enjoy a family life in Bonn.
Current employment: SISTRIX , an search marketing data, tool and measurement company headquatered in Bonn.
Where does the name Chippy come from?
It comes from junior school. Apparently I looked like someone in the previous year who was called Chippy. I never met him.
